What Day is the Sabbath? Is Saturday the Sabbath? Is Sunday Sabbath? What Day Does God Command Us to Rest? Is it Important?

The purpose of this website is to expound on truth, truth as proclaimed by the Bible, the word of God. This study is something that really touched me and made me want to “shout it out” from the rooftops, so to speak. Therefore, I am going to write about what I have been studying about in a way that you can apply to your life and knowledge.

We are told that true knowledge is found in the word of God. Therefore, let us dive in and learn about what the Bible says about the Sabbath and worship.

Let’s begin with the fourth commandment. It says:

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”

What is the Sabbath day? That has been a huge issue with much argument for a very long time. Does it even matter? Yes, it matters. Why? Because of the commandment which God gave to the world (not just the Jewish people). We are to follow His law. After all, Jesus said “if you love me, keep my commandments.”

Exodus 20:10 says that the Sabbath is the seventh day of the week. It is the day that God rested when creating the world (Genesis 2:2,3).

“But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates.” (Exodus 20:10)

God commands that we do not work on the Sabbath. Neither us nor those who we have control over.

“And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made. And God blessed the the seventh day and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.” (Genesis 2:2,3)
  • God blessed and sanctified the seventh day. On that day God set an example for us and rested on the seventh day.
What is the seventh day? Is it Sunday? No, the seventh day is Saturday. How do we know?

  • First, we can look at the calendar. This is the simplest way. Saturday is listed as the 7th day of the week on most calendars.
  • Second, we can also look toward language. Saturday is called a derivative of “Sabbath” in 105 languages in use today.
Latin - Sabbatum
Greek - Sabbaton
Russian - Subbota
Italian - Sabbato
Spanish - Sabado
  • We can also look towards the Jewish people, who have faithfully kept the Bible Sabbath since the time of Exodus.
The Bible tells us that the Sabbath is on Saturday if we read and understand:

a.  Jesus died on Good Friday. Mark 15:42 states:
“And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day BEFORE the Sabbath.”
 b. The next day was Sabbath. The disciples rested on the Sabbath day, according to the commandment.
“And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments: and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.”
c. Mark 16:1 says that Jesus rose on Sunday, the first day of the week. The Bible says that the day he rose was the day AFTER the Sabbath.

Many people think that the Sabbath is a Jewish day of rest. However, that is not the case. God made the Sabbath for MAN (Mark 2:27). Jesus rested on the Sabbath and was the Lord of the Sabbath. Why would Jesus do away with or change something that He followed and respected, especially when we are called to be like Christ?

The Sabbath will last forever.
  • Isaiah says that the human race will keep the Sabbath in the new Earth.
“From one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord.” (Isaiah 66: 22, 23).

The Sabbath is God’s sign of sanctification (Ezekiel 20:12)

Many people say that Sunday has taken the place of Saturday as the Sabbath, as Jesus rose from the dead on Sunday. It has not been changed. Let us study together and see why:

a. Paul and his company went into the synagogue at Antoich on the Sabbath according to Acts 13:14

b. When the Jews left the synagogue, the Gentiles asked:
“that these words may be preached to them the next SABBATH” (Acts 13:42).
c. Acts 13:44 states that on the Sabbath the whole city came together to hear the word of God.

d. Paul met for Sabbath worship at Philippi by a riverside (Acts 16:13).

e. Paul preached Christ and Him crucified at Thessalonica for “three Sabbath days” (Acts 17:1-4).

f. Paul preached to the Jews and the Greeks at Corinth “EVERY SABBATH” (Acts 18:4). Paul was at Corinth for “a year and six months” preaching on the Sabbath (Acts 18:11).

The Bible never mentions Sunday as being the Sabbath.
Not once! In fact, it has been changed due to pressures to convert pagans.

The writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews in the New Testament gives as an example of the rest we are to have in Jesus Christ:

“For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, and God did rest the seventh day from all his works.” (Hebrews 4:4).

ARGUMENTS THAT THE SABBATH HAS BEEN CHANGED TO SUNDAY

Colossians 2:16-17 says: “Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath days, Which are a SHADOW OF THE THINGS TO COME; but the body is of Christ.”

Paul, however is speaking of the Jewish ceremonial feast days, that are also known as Sabbaths (Leviticus 23: 27-32). These ceremonial feast days pointed towards the cross. They were a “shadow of the things to come.”

However, the Seventh day Sabbath points BACKWARDS towards creation. The feast days and 7th day Sabbaths are DIFFERENT.

Many people say that Romans 14:1-6 states that it makes no difference which day is kept as the Sabbath. However, that is not the case.

Verse 5 is where the issue arrives: “One may esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.”

The Sabbath is not what this text is even talking about. The context of the entire passage is dealing with Christians being concerned about eating on a day and others were concerned with not eating, or fasting, on a day. Early Christians argued about whether they should keep Friday or Wednesday as fast days. Paul is saying that it does not matter what day we keep as fast days.

Remember, the fourth commandment says that we are to rest and worship on the seventh day. That is the only day in which God set aside for man as a remembrance of Creation and worship.

Look around you. Most churches keep Sunday, the first day of the week, as the “Sabbath.” This tradition came about well after Christ died. The apostles did not follow this tradition. Some point to Acts 20:7-11 as stating that the Sabbath was made into Sunday because Paul broke bread on this day. However, the early church broke bread EVERY DAY.  Changing the Sabbath to Sunday was a tradition of man.

Christ said, of the traditions of men:

“Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandments of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups, and many other such things you do.” (Mark 7:7-8)

Christ here is saying that we worship in vain if we follow the commandments of men and lay aside the commandments of God. Here Christ is also saying that it is important to follow the commandments, although some churches deny the importance. Yes, we are saved through Christ, but we are to still follow the rules that God has given us. It was Christ, himself, who said, “if ye love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15).

Peter says that “we ought to obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29).

God does not change. His law does not nor has ever changed. The ten commandments will exist still in Heaven. They are eternal.

The Bible is silent on any controversy of the Sabbath during the times of the new testament. There is nothing in the Bible to even suggest that the Sabbath was done away with. So, why was it changed?

Daniel 7:25 states that the little horn power “thinks to change times and laws.” The fourth commandment is the only commandment / law that deals with time.

Rome wanted to keep Sunday for various reasons (paganism, to be different than the Jews, etc.) At one point, to keep away from persecution, early Christians worshiped on both Saturday and Sunday to appear distinct from the jews, but never imagined that this would lead the seventh day Sabbath to being replaced with Sunday, the first day of the week.

Q. Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday?
A. We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday.
Peter Geierman, The Convert’s Catechism of Catholic Doctrine (1951) p. 50

Many people know that the Sabbath is the Seventh day. They know that this is the day that God has commanded for rest, worship and remembrance. Yet, few want to stray from tradition. Many pastors have lost their jobs when they found the truth of which day is the Sabbath and just how important worship on the seventh day Sabbath is for the Christian.

I am of the belief that Christ will forgive those who do not worship on the Sabbath, or who keep Sunday, as long as they do not have the light in them about the true day of Worship. However, once you know the truth and continue to disobey the commandments, then you are without excuse.

We are saved by faith, but the law is not made void through faith:

“Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.”

Jesus told the rich young ruler that if he wanted to enter Heaven, he had to keep the commandments. Then Jesus told the rich young ruler to sell all he had and follow Him. Jesus wants us to follow him. God did not create his laws arbitrarily. Most Christians agree that we are not to kill each other, steal, or commit adultery. Yet, many believe that the Sabbath commandment is of no importance.

Look at your church. Do they know of the seventh day sabbath? Do they follow it? Why not? God’s law is crystal clear. How can one lead their flock to disobey one of God’s commandments? The Bible is so clear over which day is the Sabbath, yet man’s tradition has overshadowed that importance to many. Jesus calls us to be “different than the world.” We are a unique and peculiar people. The first day Sabbath has always been “of the world.” Its roots are in paganism. The first commandment says we are to love the Lord thy God. There is only ONE God. Why follow pagan traditions when it comes to worshiping that same God who has set aside the seventh day and commanded us to worship on it?

The People Are Angry: Recent Current Events (September 2016) That Are Pointing Towards the Rise of Nations Spoken About in Bible Prophecy.

The people are angry, folks.  We are at a time like no other where people are about to rise up over every issue that comes in front of us.  I have never seen a time in my life where anger was so widespread.  It seems as if the entire world is about to go mad at any given moment!

Lately in the news we have seen many issues that have divided people on a massive scale.
And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.  (Revelation 11:18).

This event caused anger and rage on the internet.  Proponents of the zoo and of the gorilla took this to the extreme.  Fighting and name calling was rampant.  Threats were made to both the zoo and to the mother.

"The boy's mother also became the target of harassment on the internet and social media." -Wikipedia

This one is the current event of choice right now on websites like Facebook.  This stems over the treatment of Black Americans.  Everyone seems to have an all important and emotionally charged opinion on this issue that has divided the country.

To even compound matters further, there are battles over the words and terms "Black Lives Matter" with offshoots such as Blue Lives Matter and All Lives Matter.  Facebook and Social Media has EXPLODED with people on all sides of this issue proclaiming their views on this issue.  Anger abounds!

  • Presidential Election 2016

Nothing has made the public as angry as this current election.  For those who are followers of Bible prophecy, this is something to follow closely.  The people will rage no matter who wins this election.  Everyone believes they know who is the best person for the job.  However, few seem to remember that it is God that is going to make the final choice.
Daniel said, "Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever, For wisdom and power belong to Him. 21"It is He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men And knowledge to men of understanding. 22"It is He who reveals the profound and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, And the light dwells with Him.  (Daniel 2:20-22).
THE WORLD HAS NEVER BEEN ANGRIER!!   There are constant talks of wars, not only between countries, but groups of individuals.  Even families are angrier than ever - with divorces at an alarming rate.

Yet, most of the world ignores these facts.  OPEN YOUR EYES: Look at the state of the world right now.  There is so much speaking towards Bible Prophecy and the time right before Christ returns to the Earth.

Now is the time to start studying the Bible, growing closer to Christ, praying without ceasing and striving with the Lord as Enoch did.  Look towards the example of our Lord and Savior in how you should be living in these last days.  There are many scoffers out there who will tell you that you have nothing to worry about.  Yet, look at the amount of entertainment that exists in the world.  Look at all the distractions that Satan is putting in front of you.

There has never been the amount of entertainment that exists now.  From video games, films, outdoor amusements, gambling, legalized marijuana, adult shows and more, it is endless.  Much of it is more disgusting and vile than ever before.  Cellular phone apps have taken every small remainder.  And people use them everywhere.  Everyone is glued to Facebook, arguing with each other about politics, the news or being prideful about their lives.  Where is God in all of this?  Are you really going to be ready with your current lifestyle?  Are you really going to be ready for the time of the End that Revelation speaks of with your current habits?  You have a very short time left until it is too late.  I do not say this to alarm you, but to tell you that the time is NOW.

The world is angry.  Angrier than ever before.  The people are very close to saying "enough is enough" and rising up.  We had a small taste of it with Occupy Wall Street.  There will come a day when this anger is going to spill from Facebook to the streets.  The Bible speaks of such an age, and we are getting very close to that time.  The water of anger is about to boil over.  Are you truly ready?
